One-liner
Run a Viking tavern through the winter — and decide every evening whether to keep your guests warm or keep your books balanced.
Short description
Mead & Embers is a management game about a Viking tavern in the far north. Build the taproom, hire staff and keep the barrels full — and when the first frost comes, the embers in your hearth chamber decide whether your guests stay or head back out into the cold.
Description
In Mead & Embers you take over a tavern at the edge of a village in the far north. Lay the floor, raise the walls, set out tables and barrels — and open your doors. What happens next depends on decisions that pull against each other: more seats bring more guests but longer walks for your staff. A finer room attracts merchants with deeper pockets — who are also the least patient. And above it all turns the year: once the first frost hits, warmth costs wood, light costs tallow, and in the Hard Night a single cold seat is enough for a guest to finish their drink and leave. In between, warriors want to be sent on voyages, village festivals fill the room, and regulars remember how well you treated them.
What makes it different
- Winter is the opponent, not a backdrop: warmth, light and supplies are their own cycles that pull against each other in the frost.
- Guests are not all alike: day labourers are patient and thrifty, merchants generous but impatient.
- A year with festivals, not an endless day: Blót, caravans, harvest, the Hard Night.
- Everything is explained: an in-game codex describes every system, no hidden formulas.
About the developer
Mead & Embers is made in the evenings. By day I commission heating and ventilation systems in large buildings — which may explain why, in my game, someone has to get the warmth to the guests before they arrive. The idea came from frustration with building games that turn into click-work after twenty hours. Mine should have evenings where you make a decision — and regret it.
